Hi there.

who am i?

A visual journalist at heart.

Michelle G. Lopez is a classically trained journalist who is unapologetically geeky. She is fiercely proud of her cultura, and loves being a font snob. Though she always has newspapers in her heart, the world wide web opened her eyes to the vast world of digital storytelling. Currently a manager on Tribune Publishing’s Editorial Operations team, formerly the lead technical producer at Chicago Tribune, and the digital editor of Chicago Tribune's sister publication RedEye. You can also find her writing at mom.me.

What i can do

for you or your business.

Digital

Use my experience as an editor to create or edit content and strategize ways to share it across several channels.

Website management

Have worked in multiple content management systems and am very familiar with Wordpress and Squarespace. Well-versed in Washington Post’s Arc Publishing CMS and tool suite. Managed and maintained websites for major media brands and clients.

Email newsletters

Have experience with several email service providers, and been responsible for designing, curating and producing weekly email newsletters.

Content creation/Blogging

Blogged about everything from new mom stuff at mom.me to how to dress up as Elaine from "Seinfeld" at geekylatina.com. I have written about "Hamilton," advice on dating, emoji diversity, going to music festivals pregnant and how to host a "Gilmore Girls" party over at redeyechicago.com.

Editing

Not only do I have a deep appreciation for AP Style, but I can tell you if your copy is too long, too complicated or if you overuse commas. I have experience copy editing for publications and I am that friend you have read your email before you send it to your boss, landlord or boyfriend.

Design

A significant part of my career has focused on page design for newspapers but I've gotten the chance to design all sorts of things.

newspaper design

I started designing in Quark at age 16 and never looked back. Visual journalism been a passion of mine for many years. Have designed both tabloid and broadsheet newspapers.

digital DESIGN

I have experience in everything from designing websites, banner ads, landing pages, website takeovers, to logos for online use.

Social DESIGN

I love designing graphics for social media usage and creating GIFs.

Product

I have experience working with newsroom Product teams, managers and owners—in addition to project management. I can file a ticket in JIRA, UAT like no other and discover that bug that the QA team missed.

Training

I’ve had the opportunity to train journalists and newsrooms on publishing tools, and love creating easy-to-follow training documents. I can get your grandma to expertly navigate her new Chromebook, or get anyone in your office excited about Slack.

Social media

Professionally managed social media accounts for major media brands on the following platforms:

  • Twitter

  • Instagram

  • Snapchat

  • Facebook

  • Pinterest

  • YouTube

  • Tumblr

  • Google+ (LOL)

  • Vine (R.I.P.)

  • Spotify

I can craft a tweet like no other and geek out about all things social media. I am that friend that convinces you to join Snapchat or try Instagram Stories, even when you think you're too old for it.

Photography

You'd gasp at how many photos are in my camera roll. I have taken photos casually for years but also have styled editorial photo shoots for print and online use. Bonus: Have a knack for getting a baby to smile and hold still.

AV stuff

I was never officially schooled in these subjects (I'm self-taught) but have always displayed an earnest curiosity and appreciation for audio visuals.

Audio

Audio-wise, I've produced, edited, guested on and even hosted a podcast.

Video

I am able to produce, direct, shoot, and edit videos. I've also appeared on camera

Marketing/Promotions

Have experience executing promotional contests online and in social media from start to finish. Know how to run and help carry out successful promotional events for clients — did it for RedEye Chicago’s Big Idea Awards.

Freelancing

In my spare time I am available for special projects—anything from designing wedding invitations, to greeting cards to other graphic/digital design-y things. I do best in InDesign or Photoshop, and I know my way around basic html and css.

I'm also fluent in Spanish, living that bilingual life.
